The par-four 4th hole
is the most difficult on the course, with out-of- bounds right,
two ridges in the fairway that slopes left, plenty of trees on both
sides of its 407-yard length (from the regular tee) and an elevated
green. It has correctly been given the number-one handicap rating
for the course. The next hole, the par-three 5th, is rated
15th; however this hole is 196 yards from the regular tee with out-of-bounds
right and behind the green, water to the left side near the green,
and deep sand bunkers protecting the left-sloping green. Apparently
the 15-handicap rating is based on match play, meaning both the
scratch and bogey golfers would bogey this hole. Actually,
golfers have to play most of the front nine smart, not strong, since
several holes (the first and third especially) call for less-than-driver
off the tee to put the golfer in an ideal position for the second
shot. The extra-long hitters can try a shortcut over the tree on
the relatively short (470 yards) par-five 3rd hole, but at unnecessary
risk. The second half of that hole is a steep uphill challenge,
not giving the golfer the balance needed to reach the green on the
second shot. The 8th hole uses the same ravine, coming back; however,
that hole allows the long hitters to hit away. The back
nine, for all its realignments, has two holes that golfers will
remember. The 192-yard par-three 17th has water to the right and
a steep slope to the left of the green. The tee is very elevated
and the green is not as large as many would like. And the hole plays
into prevailing, but usually gentle, tradewinds. The finishing
hole is par-five 494-yarder that has a sharp dogleg right to an
elevated green. The long hitters will try to cut the dogleg on their
second shots every time they get a good placement on their tee shots.
There is an out-of-bounds on the left side of the tee, but the fairway
is generous. Those golfers planning a second shot to the green needed
to keep their tee shots to the right side, but not too close to
the bushes there.
